The Dyson V10 Cyclone is an excellent cordless vacuum -but how do you empty it? And is the process difficult? Keep reading for our full guide (including pictures).
During our testing, we found the Dyson V10 easy to use and able to provide excellent cleaning performance.
We were particularly impressed by Dyson’s “Point and Shoot” emptying system. This system is more effective at pushing out clumps of debris than most cordless vacuums, while still being simple to use.
In this article, we’ll show you how to empty the Dyson V10 to avoid overfilling it. We’ll also discuss some extra tips for keeping your V10 in top condition.
1. Detach All Tools and the V10 Wand
Unlike previous versions of Dyson cordless vacuums, the trap door is located at the end of the vacuum.
Therefore, you can only empty the V10 once the wand (or tools) have been removed from the main body of the vacuum. Fortunately, all the tools are easy to remove using the red button.
It’s also essential to ensure the vacuum isn’t plugged into its charger when emptying. Avoid pressing the trigger when emptying too, as this can cause dust to be sprayed around the room.
2. (Optional) Take The Vacuum to an Outdoor Bin
The Dyson V10 is a bagless vacuum cleaner. Even though the emptying system is effective at pushing dirt out of the bin, that doesn’t stop dust, pet dander, and other tiny allergens from escaping into the air.
For this reason, we always recommend emptying bagless vacuums into an outdoor bin. This prevents small particles from re-settling inside your home.
If you can’t empty the V10 outdoors, the good news is that the “Point and Shoot” design allows you to hold the vacuum deeper into a bin than other vacuums. This won’t stop allergens from escaping, but it reduces the quantity – especially if you have a bin with a lid.
3. Use the Slider to Push Out Dirt and Dust
Emptying the Dyson V10 is a simple process. Hold the vacuum in one hand, then push the red slider towards the end of the vacuum with the other hand.
Pushing the slider will automatically open the trap door at the end of the dust bin. It’ll also slide the bin down the shroud, allowing the internal collar to force out clumps that would otherwise be stuck.
Once you’ve emptied the vacuum, it’s a good idea to give it a light tap to get rid of any remaining dust and dirt.
Note: To empty the Dyson V6, V7, and V8, you needed to pull out the main cylinder. We always felt this system was a bit clunky, as the cylinder didn’t slide out smoothly. The V10’s emptying system feels more solid and user-friendly.
4. Close The Lid and Push the Dust Bin Back Into Position
To finish emptying the Dyson V10, you just need to manually close the lid and push the dust bin back into position. You’ll hear a click when it’s properly secured.
And that’s it! You’ve now emptied your Dyson Cyclone V10 and the vacuum is ready to use again.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Often Should I Empty My Dyson V10?
This depends on how frequently you use the vacuum and what you’re cleaning. However, as the Dyson V10 is a cordless vacuum with a smaller capacity than most corded vacuums, you’ll probably need to empty it after every cleaning session. Regular emptying also helps prevent dirt build-up and filter blockages.
What Happens If I Overfill My Dyson V10?
Overfilling can cause your Dyson vacuum to lose suction and cleaning performance, as excessive debris in the dust bin disrupts airflow. Your Dyson may even cut out if it gets too full, so it’s important to empty it on a frequent basis.
The Dyson V10 has a “MAX” fill line on the side of the bin. You should empty the vacuum whenever the debris reaches this line.
Does The Dyson V10 Have a Large Dust Capacity?
The Dyson V10 has a dust capacity of 0.76 litres. This is bigger than many cordless vacuum cleaners, including the Dyson V8. It’s still smaller than most upright or cylinder vacuum cleaners though.
Can I Clean The Dyson V10’s Dust Bin?
Yes, the V10’s dust bin can be removed for cleaning (never clean it while it’s still attached to the vacuum). Make sure you only use a damp cloth though – you shouldn’t use any cleaning products or detergents. The bin should also be completely dry before being re-attached.

Summary
The Dyson V10’s “Point and Shoot” emptying system is simple to use and effective at pushing our dirt and dust. During our testing, we rarely found it necessary to pull out dirt by hand, which is a common problem for cordless vacuums.
In fact, the only downside to this system is that the tools and wand need to be detached before you can empty the vacuum. This is less convenient than previous versions of the Dyson cordless series, but doesn’t detract from the excellent usability of the V10.
