In-Depth Look at the Compact C2’s Features

The Miele Compact C2 Cat & Dog is a bagged vacuum cleaner that’s designed for people with pets. While the motor has been reduced from 1200W to 900W (to comply with EU regulations), it still has strong suction power, along with a pet turbo tool and odour-eliminating filtration system.

It’s worth noting there’s also a Complete version of the Miele C2 Cat & Dog. The Compact version is lighter and smaller than the Complete model, but doesn’t include on-board storage for tools.

With that out of the way, let’s take a closer look at the Compact C2’s features, design and performance.

Appearance & Design

C2 With its dark red colour scheme and shiny finish, the Compact C2 Cat & Dog is an attractive vacuum cleaner. It features a similar design to other Miele cylinder vacs, with a centralised hose joint and built-in handle. As you would expect from a Compact model, it’s relatively small and therefore easier to store.

A useful feature of Miele C2 vacuums is the swivelling hose joint, which increases mobility. The 7.5 metre cord and 3.5 metre stretch hose also provide a wide cleaning radius, so you can clean everything from stairs to cobwebs on the ceiling.

There is a dial control system on the body of the vacuum. This provides six settings for suction power, so you can adjust the power depending on the type of surface you’re cleaning. We always like vacs that provide more control, so this is a great feature – especially when vacuuming on thick carpets or delicate surfaces such as curtains.

The Miele Compact C2 Cat & Dog PowerLine uses the company’s HyClean bags. Like other Miele vacs, the bag is an important part of the filtration system, so you always need to use official bags. This adds to the cost, as Miele bags aren’t the cheapest on the market, but they do a great job at filtering.

A bonus is the Miele is slightly quieter than many upright vacuums. For comparison, it produces around 74dB with the AirTeQ floorhead, compared to the Dyson Ball Animal 2’s 80dB. There’s also automatic cable rewind, which is a handy time-saver compared to models such as the Numatic James, and a “Full Bag” indicator.

Finally, the C2 has excellent build-quality. Miele has a reputation for building reliable, high-standard cylinder vacuums, and the C2 is a great example.

Tools & Accessories

The vacuum comes with both a standard AirTeQ floorhead and a turbo pet floorhead. The AirTeQ is built for all-round cleaning, and has been re-designed for improved airflow compared to previous Miele floorheads. For pet hair, the turbo head has a powered brush bar that digs into carpet fibres to remove more dust and hair (more on that in a moment).

Like most Miele cylinder vacs, the C2 comes with several accessories, including an upholstery nozzle, dusting brush and crevice tool. The dusting brush, in particular, is built to a high standard and swivels for added convenience. The crevice tool is smaller than we would like, but this is a minor complaint.

A downside of the Compact version is that there is no on-board tool storage. Instead, there is a clip-on holster that can either be used on the handle or stored separately.

We also would have liked a miniature pet tool. While the Turbo floorhead is great for carpets, it’s not convenient for removing pet hair from upholstery. The basic upholstery tool somewhat makes up for this, but it’s not as effective as a turbo tool.

Suction Power & Cleaning Performance

The Compact is a smaller and lighter version of the C2 Cat & Dog – but that doesn’t mean it’s less effective at cleaning. This is a powerful vac that does a great job on both carpets and hard floors.

Carpets

The C2's floorheadWhile the AirTeQ does an acceptable job on carpets, the Turbo tool’s powered brush bar is much more effective. It’s powerful and great for agitating carpet fibres, so the vacuum removes more dust and dirt.

A common problem with powerful vacuum cleaners is that they can be hard to push on carpets. This is because the most efficient floor heads create a firm seal against carpet fibres. Fortunately, the AirTeQ has been designed to minimise this problem – although it still requires some effort to push on thick carpet (especially on full power). The Turbo tool is also relatively easy to push.

Hard Floors

Cleaning hard floors is when the AirTeQ floorhead really shines. It has a highly mobile neck and sits on two wheels, so it’s easy to steer around the kitchen or other hard floors. There’s also a switch for raising the bristles.

Despite the reduced suction power to comply with EU regulations, the C2 Cat & Dog also has enough power to remove dust and dirt from between floorboards.

The only area the vacuum struggles is with larger debris, such as cereal. This isn’t a power issue – the vacuum is capable of picking up larger objects – but the floorhead often pushes big debris around instead.

Stairs

The lighter and smaller design of the Compact C2 Cat & Dog makes it more convenient to carry up and down stairs. The body itself weighs less than 5kg, although when you add all the tubes and hose it weighs over 6kg.

It’s not the easiest to use for cleaning stairs though. In general, cylinder vacuums are awkward to balance on stairs, so you need to rely on the hose. While the 7.5 metre cable and 3.5 metre hose are longer than many other vacs, you may need to change sockets half way up a flight of stairs depending on the location of your power points.

On the plus side, the Turbo floorhead is great for cleaning carpeted stairs. The crevice tool is also useful for getting into the corner of steps – although this is another task for which a miniature turbo tool would be useful.

Pet Hair

The Cat & Dog makes quick work of pet hair on carpets (and came close to making our list of the best pet vacs). The turbo floorhead is brilliant at pulling both long and short hair from carpet fibres, so you often only need a single pass to remove the majority of hair.

It’s no slouch at cleaning hair on hard floors either. The strong suction power and AirTeQ head combine to quickly suck up pet hair and other debris.

Filtration

The primary filter is the HyClean bag. This does a great job at trapping dust and other particles, while preventing allergens from escaping.

Along with the HyClean bags, the C2 Cat & Dog comes with Miele’s Active AirClean filter. Aside from acting as a separate exhaust filter, this includes an activated charcoal layer for absorbing bad odours. Don’t expect this filter to eliminate all bad smells, but it can noticeably reduce them.

The combination of bag and AirClean filter mean the C2 is a great choice for people with allergies.

Emptying & Cleaning

One of the advantages of a bagged vacuum is they are less messy to empty. Aside from preventing dust escaping back into your home, this is also great for allergy sufferers.

Like other Miele cylinders, the C2 has an automatic sealing system. When you empty the vacuum, the bag is sealed so no dust can escape.

Price & Competitor Comparison

With an RRP of nearly £300, this isn’t a cheap vacuum. The combination of excellent cleaning performance, high-quality construction and efficient filtration means it justifies the cost though – especially if you have pets.

It’s also often on sale for less than the RRP. If you can find it for £250 or under, it provides great value for money.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the Difference Between the C2 Compact and C2 Complete?

The C2 Compact and Complete Cat & Dog vacuums have similar features and design. Both come with a pet turbo rush, Active AirClean filter and a 900W motor. They are also similarly priced.

There are a few important differences though. The C2 Compact has a smaller design and weighs around 1kg less. It also has a slightly longer cable – 7.5 metres compared to 6.5 metres – which leads to a wider cleaning radius.

The only real downsides to the Compact model are that it has a smaller dust capacity and there is no on-board tool storage.

Verdict

The Miele Compact C2 Cat & Dog is an excellent vacuum cleaner for people with pets. It does a great job at removing pet hair from both carpets and hard floors, especially when using the turbo floorhead. It also has an effective filtration system and a compact design.

There are a few drawbacks though. It’s not the best vacuum for picking up larger debris, so you’ll need to adopt a “lift and place” approach when cleaning spilt cereal or cat litter. It’s also expensive and has a smaller capacity than the C2 Complete Cat & Dog.

Even so, this vacuum provides outstanding all-round performance and a host of useful features. If you don’t mind the smaller capacity and lack of on-board storage, it’s almost as good as the more expensive C3 Cat & Dog (which is our #1 pick in this category).
